The surge in the number of over-the-top (OTT) providers in Asia-Pacific, from PrimeTime in Thailand, to iflix in Malaysia and Stan in Australia may satisfy consumers who are able to enjoy content on all devices, but there is concern regarding digital rights management (DRM) and content piracy on the part of content providers and pay TV operators.

Content piracy is not limited to produced content, but also prevalent in live sports streaming. In the 2014/15 season, Premier League engaged Irdeto to gain access to in-depth knowledge of the piracy landscape combined with global investigative and security expertise to protect its intellectual property due to the rise of illegal redistribution of sports content on IPTV set-top boxes. By working with Irdeto, the Premier League was able to proactively address the illegal redistribution of Premier League content and tackle the proliferation of devices that make it possible.
