Young Star Wars fans were given a treat recently when Cartoon Network aired the Lego Group
and Lucasfi lm’s joint-new adventure and their fi rst-ever original television special, Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace. The fully animated HD programme was written by Emmy
Award-winner Michael Price (The Simpsons) and produced by Academy Award-winning Animal Logic, the production company behind the Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Happy Feet.
Animal Logic Colourist Sam Chynoweth graded the animated feature on Nucoda Film Master. He
explains the detailed workfl ow leading up to the grade, “From the script, artists worked alongside the director creating storyboard sequences for the entire piece. The pre-visualisation
department then used the storyboards to begin a rough layout of the shots and environments and the animation department picked up those shots and started to work on the characters.
Following this process, lighters collected all of the assets created throughout the workfl ow and brought them together to start generating the final images. It’s at this point that we started the conform process in the grading suite using Nucoda Film Master. We began grading in parallel
to the delivery of the fi nal images from compositing and lighting to maximise our time in the suite. We started the DI process fi ve weeks out from delivery with the most intense work taking place in the final two weeks.”
