Hong Kong – The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) has appointed Ms. Soo Wei Shaw as executive director. Ms. Shaw will oversee the development of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), Asian Film Awards (AFA), and the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF). “HKIFF is one of the strongest film festivals internationally in propelling the recognition of Asian films and filmmakers,” said Ms Shaw. “My focus will be on developing and executing an integrated strategic plan that will allow us to continue expanding HKIFF as the premier platform for Asian cinema and for global films to launch their films to Asia.” Born in Singapore, Ms. Shaw began her 10-year film career at Warner Bros. Theatrical as a publicist and marketing executive, and later joined the Singapore Film Commission and the Media Development Authority to manage and promote the Singapore film and television industries. She was responsible for negotiating international government co-production film treaties and advice for government policy on financing and investing in Singapore films. She also managed the development of Singapore’s largest media events, such as the Singapore International Film Festival and the Asia Media Festival, and successfully led a landmark collaboration with the Asian Film Archive to preserve and promote Singapore’s film heritage. More recently, she was a marketing, brand, and events specialist consultant for the Hong Kong office of Disney-ABC International Television (Asia Pacific) before taking the post of executive director at the HKIFFS.
